(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A recent poll shows 94 percent of Oklahomans consider the character of a political candidate when they vote.

The Oklahoman/O-U Poll also found that 79 percent of Oklahomans consider character very important in presidential candidates. Fifteen percent say it is somewhat important.

The poll also shows most Oklahomans believe the next president should set high moral standards.

Gary Copeland is director of the Carl Albert Congressional Center at the University of Oklahoma. Copeland, who oversaw the poll, says the results are consistent with national data in that character seems to be the most important issue.

Copeland says character has become a more important issue in the wake of several White House scandals in recent years.

The poll of 401 Oklahomans was conducted October 16th through the 19th and has a five percent margin of error.
