(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The dome of the state Capitol will be topped with a sculpture of an American Indian by state Senator Enoch Kelly Haney.
Haney's sculpture was chosen today by the State Capitol Preservation Commission. It was chosen over five other finalists in a blind competition. Finalists were chosen from 22 Oklahoma artists who had submitted designs.
Haney's sculpture of a bare-chested Indian man, wearing leggings and a loin cloth and holding a staff and lance, was the unanimous choice of the commission
The senator says it's an honor to be chosen and he thinks it's probably the most significant thing he's done.
The statue will be placed on top of the Capitol dome once it is finished in 2002.
