OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma City Council has approved the first step toward naming a street in honor of former major league baseball player Joe Carter.

A proposal to rename Stiles Avenue between Reno Avenue and NE 4th Street to Joe Carter Avenue was approved on Tuesday.

The Millwood High School graduate's 16-year major league career included 396 home runs and 10 100-RBI seasons.

His game-winning homer as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays ended the 1993 World Series against Philadelphia.

Carter retired after the 1998 season.

The proposal goes next to the Planning Commission and will return to the council next month for a final decision.

If approved, the street section would become the second Bricktown street named after a ball player. Mickey Mantle Drive was the first.
