OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Six fewer people died in traffic accidents on Oklahoma highways in August than in the same month last year, the state Department of Public Safety said Monday.
The DPS said 53 people died in August.
Six of the fatal crashes were alcohol-related. The DPS statistics showed unsafe speed continued as the leading cause of fatal crashes with 12 deaths. Nine people died in crashes caused by people failing to stop or yield and five died because the driver traveled left of center.
DPS said just over 75 percent of those killed were not wearing safety belts.
Tulsa County had the highest count with eight deaths. McIntosh County had five.
