NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ Gymnastics coach Steve Nunno, who coached Oklahoma native and two-time Olympian Shannon Miller, has been named women's gymnastics co-head coach at the University of Oklahoma and will be named head coach after the 2000-2001 season, Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione said Wednesday.

Nunno will team up with Sooners' longtime head coach Becky Buwick-Switzer for the upcoming season, Castiglione said. Buwick-Switzer, wife of former Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners coach Barry Switzer, has said next season will be her last after 16 years as head coach of the OU women's gymnastics program.

``I'm extremely excited about the addition of Steve Nunno to our gymnastics staff,'' Buwick-Switzer said. ``I am confident that the success we have experienced in my time as head coach will continue under Steve's leadership.''

Nunno, of Edmond, was an assistant coach under Buwick-Switzer from 1983 to 1985 and helped OU win a pair of Big Eight titles. His appointment as head coach must be approved by the OU Board of Regents.

``I am excited and proud to once again be part of the University of Oklahoma staff,'' Nunno said. ``Now I would like to add my energies to the already great gymnastics staff to help build a powerful women's gymnastics program.''

Aside from coaching Miller, America's most decorated gymnast, Nunno was an assistant head coach for the U.S. in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics where he helped secure a combined seven medals, including two golds.

Nunno was the U.S. head coach in the 1993 and 1994 World Championships and also served as an assistant on the 1991 and 1995 squads.
