Houston -- Taking shelter underneath a tree during a thunderstorm isn't recommended.

An accident yesterday in Houston proved that point.

Eighteen people were hospitalized with mostly minor injuries after a tree they were standing under was struck by lightning.

A Houston Fire Department spokesman said a group of 17 children and one adult was leaving Six Flags Astroworld amusement park in South Houston when they stood under a tree to seek shelter from a passing thunderstorm.

Officials said most of the kids were more frightened than injured by the experience.

Authorities said three of the children were transported to Hermann Hospital. The others went to the hospital in a private van to be checked out as a precaution.
