(Oklahoma City-AP) -- The past decade has been good for golf course development in Oklahoma. Thirty-nine new courses have opened throughout the state in the past decade. That doesn't include about a dozen more that added new nine holes to an existing nine.

Sixteen new courses have opened in the Oklahoma City area alone. But the boom in development appears to be slowing down with fewer new courses being built and renovations to existing courses also on the decrease.

Oklahoma ranks 28th nationally with about 200 golf courses. The National Golf Foundation says a record 564,000,000 rounds of golf were played nationally in 1999. The foundation says the number of golfers remained the same but the number of rounds they played increased.
