Study Says Pool Alarms By Themselves Are Not Reliable to Prevent Drowning

When the temperatures warm up, the covers come off the pools. But this summer activity can be dangerous to little ones. 350 children under the age of five drown each year. These accidental deaths occur mostly in residential pools.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says many children drown due to the fact that the child slips out of the house without the parentâ€™s knowledge. The CPSC says you need more than one precaution to protect children. "A pool alarm is one good layer of protection, but you can't depend on it alone,â€ said Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Ann Brown. â€œYou need other things like alarms on your door of the house, if the your door is left open. You also need a good strong fence with a self latching gate."
