(Tulsa-AP) -- Radioactive oil pipe unearthed last week along the Creek Turnpike was found not to be hazardous by state environmenta lofficials.

And that leaves disposal up to contractor Carter Excavating.

Michael Dean is a spokesman for the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality.

Dean says the pipe has enough radiation to put into play some federal guidelines. He says a person would have to sit still on the pipe for two years to be harmed by the radiation it contains.

But Dean says the pipe will have to be buried in a special land fill.

Dean says the D-E-Q sent a letter to Carter ordering him to put the pipe in a secure location until its disposal.

Oil that is inside pipe that dates from the 1930s and '40s can naturally turn into radioactive material.
