NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- The school of petroleum and geological engineering at the University of Oklahoma is being renamed in honor of an alumnus who is giving $6 million.

Curtis W. Mewbourne, president of Mewbourne Oil Co., is making the gift, which will be supplemented by $2 million from the State Regents Endowment Program.

The school will be named the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering.

"Curtis Mewbourne exemplifies the kind of stewardship that makes opportunities possible for the next generation," OU President David Boren said Thursday.

As the Mewbourne School enters this new era, it is committed to reshaping itself to meet the needs of a technology-driven industry, officials said.

"Technology will continue to drive the future of the energy sector -- the third-largest in the world -- and the Mewbourne School is dedicated to producing the top talent, research and continuing education programs to meet the industry's needs," Mewbourne said.

"OU has a long tradition of excellence in petroleum engineering. We want to build on that reputation and offer a program that produces industry leaders."
