(Washington-AP) -- The Justice Department wants to split Microsoft in two.

That's the recommendation it's making to the federal judge in the successful government antitrust lawsuit against the company.

The Justice Department is joined in its request by the 19 states that also sued the company.

The proposal was submitted after the financial markets closed today.

One of the two companies that would result from the split would produce the Windows operating system. The other would handle other software applications.

The two companies would be forbidden from reuniting for at least ten years.

Microsoft's Bill Gates calls it a "radical" solution that would do great damage to the company.
