OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The first list of National Merit Scholars this year includes nearly 1,200 students nationwide, 14 of them from Oklahoma.

The students' scholarships announced today will be paid by corporations. Most are renewable for four years of college and range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Other corporations provide a single payment of $2,000 and $5,000.

The scholarships must be used for undergraduate work and can only be used at accredited U.S. colleges.

The next list of National Merit Scholars will be released May 3 when the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announces winners of their company's scholarships. More than 2,500 more students will be named.

The National Merit scholarships sponsored by colleges will be announced May 31 and in July.

Oklahomans named today are Jon Cast, a home-schooler from Bethany; Jason D'Souza of Bishop Kelley in Tulsa; Stacy Payne of Owasso; Alaina Maxwell of Shawnee; Paul Clark of Bishop McGuinnessin Oklahoma City; Nicholas Ennis of Bixby; Jennifer Livesay of Booker T. Washington in Tulsa; Leila Hankey of Edmond Memorial; Margaret O'Connell of Jenks; Sarah Cobb of Lawton Christian School;Valerie Parkinson of Lawton MacArthur; Sabrina Pepper of Lawton Eisenhower; Jeffrey Frazier of Norman North, and Gregory Zitterkobof Tulsa Union.
