OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahomans will mark the opening of the Oklahoma City National Memorial on Wednesday with two ceremonies --one private for families, survivors and rescue workers and one public with President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno.
The memorial will open on the fifth anniversary of the truck bombing that killed 168 people and destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building.
At an 8:30 a.m. private ceremony, Robert Allen, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas, will deliver the main address. Allen is former pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and was coordinator of civilian chaplains during the rescue and recovery effort after the bombing.
Moments of silence for the 168 victims, the readings of their names, a military fly over and the ringing of church bells will punctuate the ceremony, which will culminate with a flag raising ceremony on the site to hand over the memorial.
At 5 p.m., Clinton and Reno will join a number of dignitaries, family members, survivors and rescue workers as well as the general public in a 90-minute ceremony to officially open the memorial to the public.
Clinton will deliver the keynote address. Reno will speak on behalf of the Justice Department, Sen. Don Nickles on behalf of the congressional delegation, National Park Service Director Robert Stanton on behalf of the National Park Service and Gov. Frank Keating on behalf of the state.
