(Pawhuska-AP) -- A Cherokee tribal official says the tribe remains committed to exploring a car tag compact with the state.

Pat Ragsdale is the governmental services communication directo rfor the tribe.

The compact would allow the tribe to sell its own car tags and share the money with the state.

Ragsdale says the tribe wants to head off any legal or jurisdictional battles that might develop if the tribe were to simply sell its own car tags and take all the money.

Officials say 15 of the state's 39 tribes already sell their own vehicle tags, but that most of those tribes are too small to have much impact on state revenue.

The Cherokees would be different, with about 100,000 tribal members living in Oklahoma.
