OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The new superintendent of park services for the Oklahoma City National Memorial wants to ensure that she and her staff help the memorial accomplish its mission.
"I had heard that this was a very sad mission, but it was the people here in Oklahoma who sold me on wanting to come to this part of the world," said Mary Bomar, a 10-year veteran who was named to the position Monday.
"I just couldn't get over how everybody here pulled together to accomplish what the have."
Bomar has spent the past six years at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas. She will oversee the work of her dozen rangers and will work with a docent program involving as many as 350 local people who have volunteered to help memorial visitors with tours and information.
Bomar also will be working for a trust appointed to manage the site, including civilian directors for the memorial, museum and anti-terrorism institute.
The partnership is unique because the Park Service and memorial foundation will jointly operate the memorial. "I am motivated to take on some challenges," she said, "and I think we will be very successful, because everybody wants to make it work."
Bomar will arrive in Oklahoma City next week, memorial officials said.
