TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- The National Sheriffs' Association has named Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz as its sheriff of the year for 1999-2000.

The group chose Glanz during its winter conference last week. He said he was notified Saturday.

"I was kind of overwhelmed," Glanz said Monday.

Glanz, who is running this year for a fifth term in office, said he would formally accept the award in June at the organization's national convention in Kansas City.

Glanz said he was nominated for the award by the Oklahoma Sheriffs' Association. About 25 other sheriffs across the country were nominated as well.

Glanz said he was selected because of his many projects in the community, especially his active involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. He was involved in the creation of a scouting merit badge and a special award for crime prevention, an effort he says has helped children and their families across America lower their risk of becoming victims of crime.

He also said he was recognized for his efforts to prevent privatization of the new Tulsa Jail.
