(Santa Rosa, California-AP) -- They munched on cookies and sipped root beer -- standard fare for the "Peanuts" crowd, more than two-thousand in all, remembered the "Peanuts" creator today in his adopted hometown of
Santa Rosa, California.
Schulz, who died on February 12th from colon cancer, the day before his final "Peanuts" strip appeared, was recalled as
humble and generous.

His widow Jeanne says Schulz only realized how beloved his creations were after he decided he was too ill to continue the
strip.

One of Schulz's daughters says, "He was taken from this world to the next at the most sacred of moments for him because he earned it."

After the ceremony, British World War Two-era fighter planes flew over in a missing man formation, one plane trailing smoke from its wings.
