(Corpus Christi-AP) -- Work on the Texas Gulf Coast progresses on the most extensive excavation of what is believed to be the site of Texas' first European settlement. Archeologists tell the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that they they're finding conclusive evidence that a historic Spanish outpost was built on the site of Fort St. Louis.

That's where the French explorer La Salle established Texas' first European colony. A paper trail of Spanish documents have always stated that the Spanish fort in Victoria County went up near the 300-year-oldFrench settlement site. But until now, the precise location of these historic French and Spanish settlements had always remained a mystery.
