(Santa Fe, New Mexico-AP) -- The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum says its "Frybread Power" T-shirt is being illegally made and sold in Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico. The nonprofit institute holds the rights to the popular shirt, which is based on the design of a T-shirt worn in the Miramax movie "Smoke Signals." But former institute spokesman Dan Agent says he sees unauthorized versions of it being sold in gift shops, powwows and elsewhere.
Under the licensing agreement with Miramax, all proceeds from the shirt's production costs are to benefit the I-A-I-A Museum. Agent says he has warned vendors in Arizona that they face prosecution for selling the unauthorized T-shirts, which he says lack many features of the authentic shirts. Agent lives in Tahlequah.
