Hayes resigning to care for mother

(Norman-AP) -- The assistant coach for Oklahoma's 22nd-ranked women's basketball team has resigned. Kristi Hayes resigned today to return home to Iowa to help care for her mother Vicky Kinne.

(Norman-AP) -- The assistant coach for Oklahoma's 22nd-ranked women's basketball team has resigned. Kristi Hayes resigned today to return home to Iowa to help care for her mother Vicky Kinne.

Hayes' mother is stricken with cancer. Hayes' husband Jonathan Hayes is an assistant football coach for Oklahoma. Hayes has been with the Sooners for seven months. She plans to return home in mid-February.

Coach Sherri Coale will promote administrative assistant Deren Boyd to interim assistant coach for the remainder of the season. Boyd is in his first year as a full-time staff member. He has been with the women's basketball program for four years. Hayes is a native of Jefferson, Iowa. She played basketball at Drake.
