In El Paso Thursday night, the 13th ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane became the first division one team to win 20 games this season after subduing the Miners, 89-71. David Shelton’s 21 points helped TU overcome foul trouble, and a tough Texas-El Paso defense at the Don Haskins Arena.
Tulsa led 42-32 at halftime thanks to a late spurt, and another run in the second half helped push a six point lead into a 15-point cushion before UTEP rallied to get within double digits again. Tony Heard followed Shelton with 16 points, including four three-pointers.
Eric Coley managed 14 despite sitting out more than half the game with foul trouble. Greg Harrington was also in double figures with 12. Tulsa shot 55 percent from the field in moving to 20-1 overall, and 5-0 in the WAC. TU’s next action comes Saturday at Fresno State.
