A break-in at a downtown church during whichracial and sacrilegious slurs were scrawled on the walls hasresulted in three arrests, police say.
Katrina L. Knox, 24, Jonathan C. Ward, 20, and Eric L. Kidwell,20, were arrested on complaints of second-degree burglary, malicious intent and injury to a house of worship, Cpl. Tom Fordsaid. They were apprehended early Saturday on the roof of the First Baptist Church.
The intruders apparently entered the building on the seventh floor from a fire escape. They wrote slurs on the walls of the sixth and seventh floors, Ford said. The intruders also urinated and defecated on the floors, walls and several Bibles.
Ken Warren, administrative pastor of the church, said a crew began cleaning up the mess first thing Saturday morning. The church had services Sunday, even though signs of the vandalism were evident. Parishioners "were shocked, because it's kind of like it happened in their own homes," Warren said.
