OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Bartlesville teacher Mitsuye Conover has been named as one of four finalists for the 2000 National Teacher of the Year.
Mrs. Conover is an 11th grade advanced placement history teacher. She was selected in September as the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year and is the third state teacher in the past four years to be named a finalist.
"This certainly speaks about the quality of our teachers, their ability to compete with the very best teachers in this nation and Oklahoma's support of the Teacher of the Year program," said state School Superintendent Sandy Garrett. "Mitsuye personifies what is right about education in Oklahoma, ingenuity, hard work and perseverance," she said. "We are proud of our accomplishments and also of the public and corporate sponsors which have made our program the best recognition programin the nation."
The other finalists are Marilyn Whirry of California, Margaret Holtschlag of Michigan and P. Brett Smith of Minnesota. The finalists will go to Washington, D.C., in March for interviews with the national selection committee.
The winner will be announced in April.
