(Decatur, Illinois-AP) -- Both sides are weighing in on a federal judge's ruling that an Illinois school board was within its rights to oust six black students.
The Decatur School Board expelled five of the students for fighting at a football game last fall. One withdrew rather than face expulsion.
School Board President Jacqueline Goetter says local control is the central issue. She says the school board cannot have outside pressure.
Reverend Jesse Jackson has led a crusade against the school's "zero tolerance" policy against violence.
He says the court has offered no relief to the youths -- "and showed no mercy for getting them back in school."
Jackson says he's planning two rallies in Decatur this month. His Rainbow/PUSH Coalition is also planning an appeal.
