(New Orleans-AP) -- Florida State is the first team to be number-one from wire-to-wire in The Associated Press football poll. The Seminoles capped their 12-and-0 season by winning the Sugar Bowl 46-to-29 over second-ranked Virginia Tech.

F-S-U picked up all 70 first-place votes while earning its second national championship. The Hokies stayed ahead of third-ranked Nebraska despite the Cornhuskers' Fiesta Bowl win over Tennessee. Wisconsin is fourth, followed by Michigan. Kansas State inched up a notch to sixth, ahead of Michigan State, Alabama, Tennessee and Marshall.

Number-eleven Penn State is followed by Florida, Mississippi State, Southern Mississippi and Miami. Georgia checks in at 16th, ahead of Arkansas, Minnesota, Oregon and Georgia Tech. Texas, Mississippi, Texas A-and-M, Illinois and Purdue round out the top-25. Oregon, Mississippi and Illinois cracked the poll with impressive bowl victories.
