(Cache-AP) -- A motorist is dead and a Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper is wounded in connection with a gun battle near Cache. The shooting occurred late last night after a routine traffic stop on U-S 62 just east of Cache.
The dead motorist has not been identified pending notification of relatives. The patrol says Trooper Kerry Massey of Lawton pulled over a pickup truck for a routine traffic stop just before 9 p-m. The patrol says the driver got out of the truck, pulled a weapon and started firing at Massey. Massey returned fire. Massey was struck in the wrist and the chest but was wearing a protective vest.
The driver got back into his truck and drove about a mile before pulling to the side of the road. The patrol says Massey followed the truck and waited for backup. Troopers tried to make contact with the driver for about an hour. Troopers finally approached the truck and found the driver dead, apparently of gunshot wounds. Massey is a 32-year-old trooper who has been with the patrol for more than eight years.
