(Norman-AP) -- A decision by the state's textbook committee to require disclaimers on textbooks explaining biological evolution is drawing the ire of faculty members at the University of Oklahoma.
One hundred twenty-four faculty members in biological and physical sciences, anthropology and history of science sent a statement to Governor Keating last week. The professors said the disclaimer not only misconstrues the theory of evolution, it misrepresents the meaning of scientific theory.
The statement says by the committee's action, they demonstrate that it is either unaware of or has chosen to ignore the wealth of evidence supporting the theory of evolution.
The Oklahoma State Textbook Committee voted November fifth to require new science textbooks carry a statement that evolution is a controversial, unproven theory.
