The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority has built
eight storm shelters at five locations after the May 3rd tornadoes that brought home the danger of being on the highway in a storm.
Three motorists were among the 44 people killed in the tornadoes.
Some of the shelters will hold 20 people. Others will hold up to 30, said spokeswoman Lu Richardson.
She said the shelters were built for the toll booth operators but will be available to drivers caught at the toll booths on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Turnpike employees working at toll booths where no storm shelters were built already have underground utility tunnels that can be used for protection.
The shelters cost 42-thousand dollars.
