(Dallas-AP) -- At least four Big Twelve Conference teams are still trying to determine who will be their starting quarterback.
Nebraska coach Frank Solich said during a conference call with other coaches today that he doesn't expect to answer that question until after the season has begun.
He says he'll eventually name a starter, but for now, it's a battle between Bobby Newcombe and Eric Crouch.
Missouri is in the same boat, except that the Tigers have three quarterbacks vying for the starting job. They'll all get some playing time until the decision is made.
At Baylor, new coach Kevin Steele says he believes in the one quarterback system and expects to make an announcement this week on who will be the starter. It will be either Jermaine Alfred, who passed for 1,268 yards on 97 completions last year, or Odell James, who threw for 435 yards on 45 completions, are competing.
Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said he will decide between quarterbacks Sage Rosenfels and Derrick Walker before the team's season opener next week.
At Texas Tech, coach Spike Dykes says his quarterback situation has kept him smiling through preseason. Rob Peters was injured most of last season, and Dykes says he forgot how good Peters was.
Texas coach Mack Brown has no quarterback worries with starter Major Applewhite back again. His biggest challenge is figuring out who will replace Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams in the backfield.
