A Muskogee County family's fight for justice is getting national attention. 22-year-old Scott Cannon was killed in Muskogee in January of 2004.

His parents are still fighting to see justice in their son's death. News on 6 anchor Terry Hood explains why they're closer than ever.

Johnny Cannon and Pamela Stonebarger's fight for justice has taken them all over Muskogee and even to Hollywood. Their son Scott was stabbed nine times in the throat and head. The Muskogee County District Attorney refused to file charges against 29-year-old Maurice Ballard, whom police arrested at the scene. The District Attorney's office says Ballard stabbed Scott Cannon in self-defense.

Cannon's parents began a petition drive and now have enough signatures to call a grand jury to investigate their son's case. They say the response from the community has been overwhelming and even some famous names have taken up their cause.

Cannon's parents just got back from taping an upcoming episode of the Doctor Phil show. They say Doctor Phil told them not to give up the fight until they got real justice. Scott’s mother Pamela Stonebarger: "I mean, I haven't even been able to grieve my son's death, that's what I told Dr. Phil, I said I haven't even been able to grieve my son's death yet because I have been so upset and so distraught over the injustice."

That episode of the Doctor Phil show will air on March 22nd.

The grand jury has thirty days to take up Scott Cannon's case.
