OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma County prosecutors are filing charges against 84 people as part of a crackdown on bogus check writers during the holiday season.

The district attorney's office says about 250 bad checks were written to 66 merchants in the county, costing a total of $106,000. Spokeswoman Debra Forshee says more than $40,000 have been recovered and returned to the businesses.

Investigator Larry Andrews says the DA's office contacts the people who wrote the bad checks and gives them an opportunity to pay before charges are filed.

Scott Cheatham with an Oklahoma City motorcycle shop says a person who wrote a bogus check for $6,500 returned with his grandmother to pay off the check the day an arrest warrant was issued.
