OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ There is a record number of students attending Oklahoma public schools this year.

The State Education Department says the total number of students is 629,134 as of October 1st, 2004.

The department says 61 percent of the students are white, 19% Indian, 11% are black, 8% Hispanic and 2% Asian.

The biggest increase is in the number of Hispanic students, up by 8% or nearly 4,000 students.

The number of Indian students rose by almost 2% while the number of Asians fell by 6%, the number of white students is down by almost 1% and the number of blacks decreased by .2%.
