McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- The McAlester City Council will consider ending a policy in which the city buys unused vacation and sick leave from some city officials.

The proposal to abolish the buybacks comes after revelations City Manager Randy Green was paid $579,500 since July 1999 for his unused leave. Green's contract is under state and federal investigations and the council voted unanimously on Wednesday to fire Green after he serves a 20 day suspension.

McAlester has also paid nearly $323,000 to buy back leave from eight other current or former city department heads.

The council is to meet next week to vote on whether to end the buyback program.
