Acclaimed Tulsa author Clifton Taulbert is developing quite a following in Iraq, and he didn't even know it. Taulbert has written three "little clif" children’s books based on his childhood in Mississippi.
Dozens of copies of the books ended up in a shipment to American soldiers overseas. US troops gave the books and toys to the Iraqi children. So Taulbert was asked to send more.
He says he's not surprised Iraqi children can relate to stories about African Americans in the rural south. "At the end of the day you're talking about something that’s universal. That bond of unselfishness that is so essential for any child's life."
Taulbert says it's not just the content of the books, but the act of giving that's making a difference.
