State Question 713 passed in Tuesday night's election, so beginning January 1st the price of a pack of cigarettes will go up 55 cents.

News on 6 reporter Rick Wells found a way some smokers are saving money.

If a better price for tobacco products is your objective Bill Pennington may have just what you're looking for.

His new American Pride Tobacco Company at 6117 East 31st Street sells everything you need to make your own cigarettes. “The purpose of injecting is one you get a better tasting cigarette, it burns longer and then the cost."

He says you can make your own with good tobacco, for about one third the cost of a pack of smokes at the store. You don't roll your own you inject them, kind of like stuffing. Here's how it works. You need an injector. You take about a tablespoon of tobacco, put it in the machine. Then get one of the paper tubes, it already has the filter on it. "Just slide it on the nozzle, then pull the handle and you have a cigarette."

They even will sell you cigarette sized plastic boxes to put them in. "The ultimate crush proof box.”

Making' your own is already popular where cigarette taxes are high. "Europe, Australia, Canada, I'd say 30 to 35 percent of the people are already doing this."

He has 35 different cigarette tobaccos. There are full flavored and light ones, menthol and menthol light. He even has some that's vanilla flavored. Gourmet cigarettes you make yourself. "It's an option that's out there if you want it."

You can save at least half the cost of cigarettes at the store, if you don't mind making your own.
