There are lots of things that make the Tulsa State Fair an interesting place to spend some time. There's the midway and then there are hundreds of exhibits you can't see anywhere else.
News on 6 reporter Rick Wells found something that caught his eye in the creative arts exhibit, a quilt featuring a big ambulance with blinking lights.
I figured a paramedic's mother or grandmother did it? Patrick Austin McGhee’s mom is a quilter and prizewinning quilter at that. When you think of a quilter, you think of a grandmother, but not this case.
Shannon McGhee is the quilter. "My mom always really liked quilts and thought they were beautiful and always wanted to learn how to do 'em, but never did. So when I first learned how the first quilt I made I made for her." This year she decided to enter a couple in the creative arts competition at the Tulsa State Fair. “I had an idea what I wanted to do so I sketched out what I wanted."
And what she wanted won her a third place ribbon, is a big EMSA ambulance with blinking lights. I guess it's not a real ambulance if the lights don't go. "This is one of the first patterns I learned, so I wanted to incorporate some sort of actual quilting pattern into it along with putting the things that represent what I do."
She's an EMSA paramedic. The quilt includes the star of life, the EMS symbol, the hardest part she said was the EKG pattern.
Patrick's dad is also a paramedic and is in the current Tulsa Fire academy, so next year I'm thinking a fire truck quilt.
