CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ Cherokee students from Oklahoma are retracing their ancestors' path along the Trail of Tears and stopped in Tennessee to learn more about their culture. The group of 45 students visited The Passage along Chattanooga's riverfront where the Cherokee people were detained and removed on the Trail of Tears.
The Passage is a series of steps with artwork symbolizing the removal in 1838 and forced march to what is now Oklahoma.
The students also split into groups to take part in a Cherokee clan council meeting.
The students are on their way to visit the Eastern Band of Cherokees in North Carolina.
