Senior citizens are prime targets not only of purse snatchings, but of identity theft and fraud as well. That's why the OK Safe seminar was held in Tulsa Friday. Officers say they've seen a 200% increase in the number of crimes targeting senior citizens during the past 10 years. Friday's event provided a number of tips for people on how to protect themselves.
"Be sure when you're looking at any expert, a physician, an attorney, an insurance sales person, that they really are who they say they are,†said Dr. Laura Dempsey-Tolan of Life Senior Services. “You check their credentials to make sure you're taking to the right person."
They say the number one threat is exploitation, either by someone calling you and asking for money or asking for you to invest in something.
