Discussions continue Wednesday on the future of all four of the city's golf courses. Tulsa’s mayor, a city councilor and residents will meet to talk about ways to keep the courses open. Many residents who live near the Page Belcher Golf Course are happy the course will be staying open, but concerned about the cutback in the size of the golf course.
Now the discussion turns to finding an operator to run the city's golf courses. In 2001, the city of Tulsa spent more than $4 million in renovations on two courses at the Page Belcher Golf Course. Just recently, there was talk that the city might close one course at Page Belcher and another at Mohawk Park. It would have saved the city half of more than a million dollar subsidy to the two golf courses.
Michael Wolfrom lives on Page Belcher's old 17th hole. Wolfrom says he and other neighbors were against the idea from the beginning, especially when talks turned to possibly selling the land to a residential developer. “It would affect our quality of life here. I'm recently retired and I enjoy the idea of being able to go out and have my coffee and read my paper."
Tulsa city councilor Bill Westcott says 150 residents have said they will be at Wednesday’s town hall meeting, but more than that are expected.
The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Page Belcher Clubhouse. The address is 6666 South Union Avenue.
Mayor Kathy Taylor says the she would like to have a company to operate the course in place by the end of golf season.
