As part of Hunger Awareness Day, Tyson Foods donated nearly 36,000 pounds of food to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma Tuesday. The donation will provide more than 140,000 meals. All Oklahomans are also being challenged to live for one week on a food-stamp budget of just $21.
"Just living for the week with the knowledge that you can't eat out, you have to be real careful about sharing your food, the kinds of things most of us take for granted," said Sara Waggoner of Eastern Oklahoma Community Food Bank.
The Eastern Oklahoma Community Food Bank provides food for nearly 150,000 people each year. Oklahoma has one of the highest hunger rates in the nation.
