A local band hits the big time. Crooked X is a hard rock band made up of four teenagers from Coweta. On Monday, they've been living their dream of playing with a big named rock and roller. That rock and roller is The Motor City Mad Man, Ted Nugent. We talked with the boys about what it’s like opening for "The Nuge" and playing for huge crowds, all at age 13. News On 6 anchor Jennifer Loren reports this is the third time in three days, in three different cities, Crooked X band members have helped unload their equipment, but they hoped Monday’s Tulsa venue would be their best yet.
"There’s gonna be a lot of our friends here. It’s going to be our home crowd. More people know about us," said Crooked X member Josh McDowell.
Crooked X began garnering national attention earlier this year as contestants on the CBS Early Show's Living Room Live contest. Since then, they've signed a huge management deal and started opening for rock and roll legend Ted Nugent.
"The shows have been awesome, really, really cool," said Crooked X member Jesse Cooper.
These four 13-year-olds may seem like an odd match for Ted Nugent fans, but the drummer's father says their success is a realization of their hard work and his dream from long ago.
"So it’s always been a dream of mine you know for my son to play with Ted. And it’s so ironic because now he's 13 years old, the age I was when I fell in love with the music and he's playing for Ted," said Bill Simpson.
The boys may be young, but they're serious musicians. This was their 95th performance together, and they say Nugent's crowds are warming up to them.
"At first they were thinking, it’s a bunch of little kids, but then when we got up there they liked us,†said Crooked X member Forrest French.
Crooked X has at least four more big shows ahead of them this summer and bright future beyond that. But for these four right now, their dream is pretty simple.
"I really hope to be playing with the same people for the rest of my life,†French said. “It’s what we want to do for a living so.â€
“Do you think you're on your way?†asked News On 6 anchor Jennifer Loren.
“I think so. I hope so," said French.
One of Crooked X's new managers is the former manager of Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and KISS. They have a lot of things planned for Crooked X, like a possible reality TV show and a show in Little Rock with Alice Cooper.
