OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Southern Takes All leads from start to finish and sets a new track record in winning the $649,400 Grade One Heritage Place Futurity for 2-year-olds at Remington Park.
Off at near-even odds under jockey Larry Payne, the New Mexico-bred son of Southern Cartel beat Zoominatchya by 1-and-one-quarterlengths, with Furrtreeous another three-quarters of a length behind in the richest race of the track's annual quarter horse meet, which ended Sunday.
Southern Takes All, trained by Eddie Willis and owned by James Sills of Cedar Hill, Texas, covered the 350 yards on a fast track in 17.384 seconds.
Southern Takes All had posted the top qualifying time for the Heritage Place Futurity during trials on May 12th, but that was his only win in four previous lifetime starts before winning Sunday.
Purchased for $13,000 at a New Mexico sale, Southern Takes All earned Willis $270,800 with the win, more than six times what the horse had previously won.
