OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ The Oklahoma RedHawks say they will establish a scholarship to honor a fallen soldier related to one of the minor-league baseball team's officials.
The scholarship will be named after the late Army Colonel Brian Allgood, an Oklahoman who died in Iraq with 11 others on January 20th when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed near Baghdad. Allgood was the top medical officer for U.S. troops in Iraq.
He was the first cousin of John Allgood, the RedHawks' executive director.
Money to help fund the scholarship to the OU Medical School -- where Brian Allgood attended -- will be raised during the RedHawks' game against Colorado Springs Saturday.
A silent auction will include a bat autographed by Texas Rangers player Sammy Sosa and a football and helmet autographed by Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops. It will begin Saturday at 5:30 p.m., when the gates open at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
Members of the OU Medical Foundation also will accept donations toward the scholarship.
