New charges have been filed against David Abston. The Tulsa County DA filed 28 counts Wednesday, accusing Abston of molesting many boys inside his south Tulsa home. Police say Abston made his home a young boy paradise, cabinets full of candy, soda, snacks, big screen TVs and three videogame consoles. News On 6 crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports officers say what happened inside his home was anything but innocent child's play.
Depending on who you talk to, David Abston is either the worst monster to ever be around young children or a generous man who's dedicated his life to helping them. Police and prosecutors say Abston would take a young boy into his home and call him his son, and then get other boys to come over and play. They say he then showed those boys pornography, made them take showers, put them on the bed, blindfolded them and promised a girl was going to perform a sex act on them. The boys say they never saw or heard a girl. A few told police they peeked under the blindfold and saw it was actually Abston. These charges involve 19 boys over seven years.
"In the almost 23 years I've been prosecuting in Tulsa County, this is the most extensive investigation ever presented by the Tulsa Police Department in this team effort," said Tulsa County DA Tim Harris.
Several boys told police Abston taught them how to use a sexual device. Some suspected he went outside to watch. Records show police found semen in the bathroom closet and outside a bathroom window that could belong to Abston.
"If it's a crime for a person's bodily fluids to be in their own home, I suspect a lot of people are in trouble in Tulsa County, Oklahoma," said Abston’s attorney Keith Ward.
Ward wonders if police questioning techniques got the boys to say things that might not be true. He says his client took responsibility for his federal child pornography charges by pleading guilty, but says Abston denies the new charges.
"Mr. Abston, throughout his entire adult life, has undertaken to help families, children, boys, girls, parents alike,†said Ward. “He has always extended himself, his home, his pocketbook with a sense of giving to people he deemed were in need."
Prosecutors say the boys in this case have suffered tremendously and are feeling shame, as do many child molestation victims.
"The boys who've talked to us have shown an extreme amount of courage and coming forward after all this time and shared with us, what we believe are truthful allegations," Harris said.
Police want to know if there are additional victims in Oklahoma or in Orlando, Florida, where Abston also owned a home.
The phone number for the child crisis unit is 669-6504.
David Abston will be sentenced on his federal child pornography charges on July 31. He will face these state charges after that.
