STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut forward Charde Houston and guard Mel Thomas were named Monday as finalists for the national basketball team that will compete at this summer's Pan American Games in Brazil.
The pair, both who will be seniors this fall, were among 45 players invited to try out for the 12-member USA Pan Am squad.
Fifteen players were invited to the final tryouts, beginning July 6 in Washington, D.C. The final roster will be announced July 16, just before the team departs for Rio de Janeiro, where the games will be held on July 20-24.
The Huskies also may be represented on the USA's under-19 team, which will compete at the World Championship for Women, being held July 26-August 5 in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Incoming freshman Maya Moore of Lawrenceville, Ga. has been chosen as one of 16 finalists for that team, which will also hold final tryouts in Washington this summer.
