WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two members of President Bush's Cabinet pushed the compromise immigration plan on one of the Sunday interview shows.
Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez told CNN's "Late Edition" that the plan is not amnesty. He said illegal aliens would have to pay a penalty.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said everybody who's been waiting in line patiently for a green card would go ahead of illegal aliens.
Although the plan was forged by liberals and conservatives, it's being criticized from both sides. Some say it's too harsh on families, while others say it would reward people who've entered the country illegally.
Debate is expected to begin tomorrow. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell thinks the Senate will be tied up for some time as members offer amendments.
