A man survives a wild wreck in north Tulsa Friday morning. He was headed home from work when a deer was hit by a car coming the other way. The deer flew through the air and through his truck. The News On 6’s Steve Berg reports somehow Anthony Chatmon made it through in one piece.
Chatmon was headed home from the nightshift about 7 Friday morning and chose 36th Street north because he says it's less crowded, at least if you're only counting humans.
"Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the deer entering the street," said Chatmon.
He says it all happened in a split second, but he remembers the deer jumped in front of a car coming the other way.
"I think the car hit the deer and launched it and threw it into me," he said. "I saw the deer in the air, and actually that's the last thing I remember."
The windshield and the back window are both gone. Chatmon has deep cuts and bruises, and the deer wound up behind the truck. He learned what happened the same way you did.
"I saw the truck on TV and saw where he landed on the hood and I guess shot right through the window," Chatmon said. “I was lucky, very, very lucky. Someone else was looking out for me."
Chatmon says he's traveled that route off and on for 27 years.
"I'll still travel it,†he said. “I'll be a lot more cautious."
Chatmon has a wife, kids and grandkids that are all glad he's okay. He says he's seen deer on the route before and says one ran into the side of his truck a few years ago. Deer are more active in early morning and late evening hours.
