AVALON, California -- A 400-acre wildfire is forcing evacuations on California's Santa Catalina Island.
The popular weekend getaway is a slender island that has 76 square miles. It's reached by ferries from Los Angeles, Long Beach and other mainland harbors.
A Los Angeles County fire official says residents from hilltop homes on the island's city of Avalon are being moved toward the beach.
The island's school and hospital voluntarily evacuated, as were some residents who live near wildlands.
