DENVER (AP) _ An attorney for a suspect arrested in a Denver-area gang sweep last week says investigators believe the man may have been present when Denver Broncos and former Oklahoma State cornerback Darrent Williams was killed.
Anthony Viorst represents 29-year-old Vernon Edwards who faces drug-trafficking charges.
Viorst says a prosecutor told him investigators believe Edwards may have been in an S-U-V carrying the gunman or gunmen who shot Williams.
Edwards' sister and girlfriend say it's not true and that Edwards was home sick in bed the day Williams was killed.
Prosecutors declined comment.
The 24-year-old Williams was shot once in the neck and two other passengers were wounded when at least 14 shots were fired into a stretch Hummer they were in following a New Year's Eve party.
Edwards was arrested on cocaine trafficking charges in massive gang sweep on April 26th. He pleaded not guilty yesterday.
