DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Suspended Iowa State guard Mike Taylor was cited by Ames police over the weekend and accused of trying to shoplift a box of cold medicine.

Taylor and James Johnson, 20, of Marshalltown, were stopped by security at Cub Food Store in Ames. According to police commander Jim Robinson, Taylor and Johnson were cited for fifth-degree theft and released at the scene.

Both have promised to appear in court on a later date.

"I am in the process of collecting more information, and the latest citation will be part of an exhaustive review of Mike's personal conduct," Iowa State coach Greg McDermott said in a statement released Tuesday. "I will consider the evidence that is available to me and determine a course of action that is suitable for Mike and our basketball team."

Taylor was arrested last month and accused of vandalizing an on-campus apartment building in February. Iowa State University police charged him with fourth-degree criminal mischief after interviewing residents and gathering other evidence. According to police, Taylor damaged a light cover and an exit sign. Liquid detergent was spread over a wall and a fire extinguisher was discharged during the incident, police said.

Under Iowa State's student-athlete code of conduct, Taylor was automatically suspended from the team pending the outcome of the vandalism case.
